Expedition photographer Frank Hurley took this famous shot of Shackleton
and
six other men as they departed the barren and dangerous Elephant Island in
a
desperate attempt to reach safety on South Georgia Island, more than two
weeks away across the stormy Southern Ocean. A party of 22 men waited on
Elephant Island, depending on Shackleton's safe arrival at South Georgia to
effect a rescue. Photo: Frank Hurley/Scott Polar Research Institute/NOVA/Shackleton's Voyage of Endurance
